This book is about Basilio Coccheri’s third time travel. This man once came from Italy to Crete. He bought an old house and while restoring it, found an old abandoned underground tunnel, which led him to the past – 4 thousand years ago.
This time travel was described in the book “The Past Underfoot”.
Every time Basilio went to this underground tunnel, he found himself in different eras of the island.
This time, through the tunnel, Coccheri got to the period when the island was captured by the warlike tribes of the Dorians. Many locals accepted the new traditions and rules, but some went to the mountains, where they continued to live according to their ancestor’s law. Every time fate brought Basilio back to the past, he had to solve different puzzles.
By coincidence, Basilio ends up in the house of the old priest Agis, who was predicted about the appearance of a man from the future. Agis introduces the newcomer to the Archon – the Leader of the main city of Crete, Knossos.
Nothing foreshadowed trouble. But the next day, someone attacked the sacred Acropolis of the Dorians, killed the guards and smashed the statue of Dorus, the founder of the Dorian tribes. The robbers took with them the magic crystals embedded in the statue’s eyes and the hands. Examining the dead bodies and the the crime scene carefully, Basilio comes to the conclusion that the crime was committed by those locals who disobeyed the Dorians and live high in the mountains. After learning about the details of the crime, the Archon gave Basilio and Agis time to visit this settlement, and began to prepare for the war. But arriving at the highland settlement of the Cretans, Agis meets his old childhood friend, whom he has not seen for many years. Eteocretus is also an elderly, well-respected priest. He is raising an adopted son, the dexterous hunter Melanthos. He said, that the crime was committed by local dignitary’s son and his friends. By this way, they tried to prove that they had become adults. But afraid of what they had done, the young criminals fled to the west of the island. Basilio, Agis and Melanthos set out in search of the fugitives, reinforced by a detachment of soldiers sent by the Archon of Knossos.
What adventures awaited our heroes and whether they were able to find the fugitives and return the stolen goods – you will learn from this book.
The Dorian period of Crete from the 11cent BC is called the Dark Ages, and we know practically nothing about this time. The book sheds tells how people lived in those distant times and shows the difficult relationship between the locals and the invaders of the island.
