For millions of years, humans and plants have inhabited this planet. People learned to use plants, treating illnesses with them, or dyeing fabrics.
Centuries passed, and many plants began to disappear from our planet. Many of them were protected by law.
Although the flora of Crete is not very rich due to its climate and isolation, people have known how to use these plants since ancient times. Almost all plants are medicinal or poisonous, depending on their use. If a plant is not medicinal, it means we know little about its properties.
In the first book, I described only a few of the island’s rare, protected plants. I also mentioned their medicinal properties. I did this not to recommend their use, but to show how people used them in ancient times.
Today, much knowledge has been lost, just as many plants are becoming a thing of the past.
The purpose of this book is to introduce people to the fascinating and little-known world of Cretan flora. You will learn that a vast variety of plants, some endemic, grow among the dry and rocky slopes of Crete.
